RUNNING AN OPORTO STORE HAS MADE THIS FRANCHISEE FEEL RIGHT AT HOME
Reddy Goguri – Oporto franchisee in Toowoomba, Queensland (QLD)
When Reddy Goguri first moved to Australia five years ago, he initially struggled to find his feet job-wise. Despite having an MBA, the language barrier made things difficult, so he left the corporate world and eventually took a job as an Oporto crew member whilst he figured things out. However, to his delight, he immediately felt at ease working for the brand and was soon inspired to open his own franchise. Since then he hasn’t looked back. He tells us about his journey.
Can you tell us more about yourself, Reddy?
I moved to Sydney five years ago from India, whereas my wife has been here since 2007. She initially worked at Australian Laboratory Services. Four years ago, we relocated to Queensland and shortly after that we bought an Oporto store. Now it’s a family affair as we work together in the business.
What’s your own career background?
I come from a business-orientated family. In India my family have several cafeterias and concession stores, so I have 15 years of retail experience. However, when I came to Australia, I initially took on a telecommunications sales position. It was quite challenging due to the language barrier and I wasn’t able to build the connections I needed to move forward.
I didn’t know what to do so I left and took on a supermarket job for a couple of months. It was then when I decided to join Oporto as a crew member in Canberra in December 2012. I was pleasantly surprised at how much it felt ‘like home’. With my own background in retail, it just seemed like a comfortable fit for me to eventually take on a store of my own. I’m now planning to open another drive-thru store in the coming year.

Who’s been your biggest supporter during the challenging times?
My wife and family are always there to help and support me, no matter what. My father is my mentor and has passed down all his business knowledge to me. He taught me that money comes and goes but family is what matters the most. That’s part of what drew me to Oporto – it’s a very family-orientated company.
Oporto recognition in Queensland
What motivated you to open a store in Queensland?
We had friends in Toowoomba so after visiting, we decided to move to the town as we really liked it. As there wasn’t an Oporto in Toowoomba, and the Queensland market has been growing rapidly. I felt it was a good choice business-wise. I knew I could also count on the brand to assist me when I needed it. I’m now really proud to be an Oporto franchisee considering we have such a unique product offering. I defy anyone not to like the Double Fillet Bondi Chilli Burger with Pineapple and Preggo Sauce! I also love telling my friends and family about my work – they’re always so curious about it.
How has the local community embraced the brand?
They’ve been really supportive. We also wanted to give back to the community, so shortly after we opened, we sponsored the Queensland Police Rugby Union Games in Toowoomba as well as the Toowoomba Southern Bowling Club. The more you actively participate in the local community, especially in regional towns, the more customers will support your store and the more you will gain a good reputation.

You need to work hard and work smart. It is very important understand the business properly, including the processes, guidelines and procedures. You also have to build a great rapport with customers as they are very influential, particularly in a regional town.
So would you recommend Oporto to people looking to buy into a food business?
Yes definitely. Starting your own business can be hard, but buying a franchise with a supportive brand like Oporto behind you is a great investment. Oporto is a rapidly growing brand in Australia, especially in Queensland and Victoria, so it has a good future ahead of it.
